Livestock secretary inaugurates University of Animal Sciences new labs

LAHORE (APP): Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab, Secretary Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan inaugurated six newly constructed laboratories of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) here Tuesday. The new laboratories included Gene Cloning and Cell Culture Lab, Molecular Diagnostic Lab, Functional Genomics Lab, Bioinformatics Lab, Cytogenetics Lab and Undergraduate Molecular Research Lab. On this occasion, the secretary said that use of new technology is necessary to keep pace with this hi-tech age. He appreciated the UVAS for setting up these modern labs and said establishment of such labs would go a long way in promotion of research and development of livestock sector. Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Chairman Prof Dr Masroor Ellahi Babar said, "These research labs are being equipped with the most modern scientific equipment including microarray system, DNA sequencer, real time PCR, latest bioinformatic softwares, etc." He said the department has the largest DNA databank of various species of livestock and it has also launched BS (Hons) Biotechnology and Informatics degree programme two-year ago and has the largest number of MPhil and PhD students undertaking their postgraduate studies and research in the university. He said the department is working hard to bring about a revolution in the field of animal genomics and biotechnology in Pakistan. Later, the livestock secretary chaired a meeting of National Organising Committee of the 6th Asian Buffalo Congress and National Buffalo Fair 2009 being organized by the UVAS in collaboration with the Livestock and Dairy Development Department and Asian Buffalo Association on October 27-30, 2009. The Asian Buffalo Association President and Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Business Management UVAS, Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha briefed the meeting on the arrangements for the buffalo congress, its scientific and technical sessions, symposia and participation of foreign guest speakers. He said that so far about 600 people from within and outside the country registered for the congress while, over 100 abstracts of scientific papers have been received for this Asian event. The secretary livestock assured the university of full support of the Punjab government in arranging this event. He asked the organizers to arrange the buffalo congress and buffalo fair with high management skills and there should be no shortcomings from any aspect. He said that the foreign delegates should be felicitated to the maximum and private sector may be involved to make this event a real success. He said the private sector should be involved in this activity and various companies should be invited from China to attend the buffalo congress and invest in the growing livestock business. The organizing committee members gave various proposals for the buffalo congress and buffalo fair.
