DNA fingerprinting technology at Veterinary University Lahore

Lahore: The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) has developed DNA fingerprinting technology for breed and parentage confirmation of horses and dogs and offered the service to equestrian and pet lovers on nominal charges.

The university earlier resolved the first ever ownership dispute of a stolen bull through DNA fingerprinting technology at Sahiwal's Sadar Police Station.

A UVAS spokesman said that scientists at the university's Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IBBt) had pioneered "animal forensicology" in Pakistan. He said that institute's molecular biology and genomic lab was equipped with most latest DNA analysis instruments.

At the lab, scientists analysed experimental cases for dogs with complete reliability. These results empowered the university to offer its expertise for the confirmation of breed and parentage of horses and dogs. For DNA fingerprinting technology and breed and parentage confirmation, the spokesman said, the institute was using micro satellite markers (genetic markers) across the whole genome by developing a new marker panel for reliable results.

UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz and Faculty of Life Sciences and Business Management Dean Prof Dr Aleem Bhatti praised IBBt Director Prof Dr Masroor Ellahi for the accuracy of results obtained through DNA fingerprinting.
