UET Lahore workshop on best Practices of digital library
Digital Library Services Best Practices.

The Higher Education Commission’s has been striving hard to uplift the standard of research and development in the higher education institutes of Pakistan. Its flagship initiative, National Digital Library Programme (NDLP) has been instrumental in promoting the use of electronic resources for the academic and research excellence. The NDLP is conducting training programmes at various institutions to promote the better use of the both e-journals and e-books.

In this regard, a 2-day training workshop was organized in collaboration with International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) on the Digital Library Services Best Practices. The workshop was hosted by University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore during December 2-3, 2008. 38 participants from 17 institutions were invited to attend this workshop. The facilitator for this workshop was Mr. Martin Belcher, Head ICT Trainings at INASP. Mr. Muhammad Iftikhar Manager IT UET, Lahore. And Mr. Hassan Zaidi, Project Coordinator of NDLP welcomed the participants in this opening address. The workshop was officially opened by Acting Vice-Chancellor (Prof. Dr. Noor Muhammad Sheikh).

Basic objective of the workshop was to demonstrate, review and share best practice of digital library services support and delivery within a university environment in Pakistan and to encourage continued digital library services development within participating institutions. University of Management & Technology, Lahore (UMT), King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Lahore University of management Sciences (LUMS), and University of the Punjab presented their case studies. Mr. Belcher was successful in encouraging the participants to actively involve in the lively discussions on the usage of e-resources and acquire the suggestions of participants in order to improve the setup of Digital Library at their respective institutes. Through the active discussions in groups; participants jotted down the problems they are facing in their organizations and suggested the solutions in order to perform a progressive role in the utilization of Digital Library Resources.

The closing ceremony was chaired by the Lt. Gen (R) Mr. Muhammad Akram Khan, Vice Chancellor of University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore. He urged the participants to make libraries a corner of superior learning at their respective institutions. He also stressed on the need of making libraries attractive for the Postgraduate and Undergraduate students and researchers that makes them visit libraries on frequent basis.

At the end of the session certificates were distributed among the participants.
