4th World Conference on 21st Century Mathematics 2009 starts at GC University Lahore

LAHORE: The Chief Guest President European Mathematical Society (EMS) and Head of Department of Mathematics Imperial College, London Prof. Dr. Ari Laptev said that enormous development has been done in ASSMS and has made a rapid development in last few years. Mathematics is the core of all science. He was addressing the 4th conference on 21st century mathematics 2009 started at Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences of GC University Lahore today organized by Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences of GC University in collaboration with Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, European Mathematical Society (EMS) and International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). He said "I am pleased to see that ASSMS has brought mathematics at this level in Pakistan is very encouraging. Youngsters are not much interested in Mathematics but the level of enthusiasm and interest in Pakistani students for mathematics is really impressive", he added. He congratulated the administration of ASSMS of GC University for holding such a high level world conference. The Vice Chancellor Government College University Lahore Dr. Khalid Aftab said that Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS) is an important integral of GC University's academic programs for creation and transformation of knowledge. He said that in advanced economies it was abundant practical skills, based on scientific knowledge and technologies rendered industrial output and economic growth, which the world had not seen in the past. "Without any doubt, behind the industrial and economic miracles were the rapid advances in basic sciences and none among them are more important than mathematics". He further said that the impact of higher education on society and economy is essentially determined by the extent and quality of educational facilities available to the students. "Demand for higher learning is growing at exponential rate and as we expand access to higher education, standards must not be sacrificed to expanded access". Dr. Khalid Aftab said that mathematics has a pivotal role in the race towards knowledge and this conference is an opportunity for transmission of knowledge based on latest research and are considered as an essential part of the academic programs of all good universities. Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences would come up to the expectations of the academic community. Addressing at the ceremony the Director General of Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS) of GC University Lahore Dr. A. D. Raza Chaudry said that one of the success stories of Pakistan in last five years is ASSMS. The ASSMS has started the largest PhD Program of South Asia and presently more than 100 PhD scholars are pursuing their research at ASSMS. The faculty and students of school has got their 200 research papers published in various high impact factor journals of world. He revealed that The Research Monitoring Agency 'Science Watch' has considered Pakistan as 'Rising Start' in Mathematics. The ASSMS also have a very successful Post Doctoral Program in Mathematics and the school has also initiated Communication Skills Professional programs for its students, he added.
