Benazir Bhutto University A Black Day
Karachi:July 18:The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) says that the commencement of evening classes at Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto University, Larkana, from Tuesday was a “black day” in the history of medical education in Pakistan.
If the evening classes are commenced (in Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto University) it will be a black day in the history of medical education in Pakistan. Instead of doctors we will be producing quacks,” Secretary General PMA Dr. Mirza Ali Azhar (Centre) told a press conference at the PMA House here the other day.
He was flanked by Dr. S. Tipu Sultan, Immediate Past President PMA (Centre), Dr. S.M. Qaiser Sajjad, Treasurer PMA (Centre), Dr. M. Idrees Adhi, President and Dr. Qazi M. Wasiq, General Secretary, PMA (Karachi).
Dr. Azhar said that the idea to start evening classes in medical colleges was the brainchild of ex-secretary Health Dr. Naushad Sheikh and quite some time ago the PMA warned him not to do so since it flouted the guidelines of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
Instead of paying heed to our warning Dr. Sheikh sent us a 50 crore rupees legal notice,” he said
But then the PMDC intervened and the idea was pushed under the rug. Even Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and the chief secretary were not taken into confidence,” he went on to say.
Dr. Azhar said if evening medical classes commenced at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University, it would open gates for private universities across the country to follow suit.

“A student pays Rs 800,000 in a private medical college per annum, thus every medical college will pocket Rs 400 million every year from the students,” Dr. Azhar cautioned and asked the PMDC to de-affiliate Chandka Medical College till the time it shuns evening classes.

Dr. Azhar also requested Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ibad, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, civil society, media and political parties to take notice that the PMDC rules were being openly flouted.

Prof. S. Tipu Sultan said that he was very depressed since Pakistan has become the sole country in the world that had earned bad name in different spheres.

“I appeal to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to immediately arrest these people,” he said, adding, “Benazir is a heroine of Sindh but sadly enough her name is being used.”

Dr. Qaiser Sajjad said that education and health were never the priorities in Pakistan, adding, “The quality of doctors is the panacea; not the quantity”.

Dr. Qazi M. Wasiq said: “Nations make progress but we are going in reverse gear. It’s a pure fraud case; it’s 420. The parents who wish their children to become doctors are being cheated.”

Prof Idrees Adhi warned that the graduates from Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto University won’t be recognized internationally.

Responding to a question, he said that Pakistan’s most acute problem was corruption and 30-40 per cent of the country’s budget was being usurped. “The ruling elite goes abroad for treatment, thus the sufferers will be the common man in Pakistan,” he said. The news.
