Bahauddin Zakariya University students 'sexual harassment'

Multan, June 14, 2008: A case of alleged sexual harassment in the semester system has surfaced in the recent clinical psychology examination held at the Bahauddin Zakariya University, a premier institution in Multan.

Two female students of clinical psychology's third semester (their names and the names of the suspected teachers have been withheld as the BZU is yet to hold an inquiry) were attempting their psychotherapy paper on May 23 when subject in-charge (a female teacher) summoned them to her office on charges of cheating.

The in-charge also summoned another female student of the same semester as a witness. The girls, however, denied the charges.

The victimised girls said when no cheating material was recovered from them, they were made to swear on the Holy Quran. Even the swearing did not satisfy the in-charge and three other female teachers present there.

They said afterwards they were forced to take off their clothes. When the girls protested the humiliation, one of the teachers said: "Had they 'pleased' a senior male teacher, they would not have met such a fate".

They said they were allowed to rejoin the examination when only 20 minutes were left. But they could not further attempt their papers due to mental agony and stress they had been through.

The girls said they contacted the dean of social sciences department and informed him about the entire episode. They said the dean asked them and the subject in-charge to submit their versions in writing.

They said they visited the office of the dean thrice to submit their application, but he was not available at his office. According to them, they had the recorded evidence of the teacher's insulting remarks and maligning their character.

When contacted, one of the teachers who had grilled the girls for alleged cheating on May 23 said they had not forced the girls to take off their clothes.

She said in the past these girls had been involved in cheating and this time they were caught red-handed. She said they had not cancelled their papers and allowed them (the students) to participate in the examination despite the fact that they were found involved in cheating.

Answering a question, she said the cheating material was recovered from the examination hall, and not from the girls.

Denying the charge of cheating in the past, the girls said their previous exam results bore the testimony to the fact that they had never indulged in such a practice.

VC Dr Zafarullah said he had just received a written complaint and an inquiry would be conducted soon. Dawn

Bhahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) students sexual harassment probe

Multan, June 23, 2008: The Bhahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) administration has made a four-member inquiry committee to probe into the claims of sexual harassment by two Psychology Department students against some teachers. The committee was formed after the complainants suspected the partiality of a two-member committee. The body will submit its report to Vice-Chancellor Dr Zafarullah on Tuesday (tomorrow).

Two female students of clinical psychology's third semester (their names and the names of the suspected teachers have been withheld till the inquiry is done) were attempting their psychotherapy paper on May 23 when subject in-charge (a female teacher) summoned them to her office on charges of cheating. They said afterwards they were forced to take off their clothes. When the girls protested the humiliation, one of the teachers, they claimed, told them that they had to please a senior male teacher.

The new body consists of Dr Khwaja Muhammad Alqama, Dr GR Pasha, Dr Sikandar Hayat and Sahr Khalil.

The complainants, however, came up with allegations against Dr Pasha and Khalil saying both had pressured them to let off the accused in turn they would help them get a job in the university.

They said the committee had not summoned the male accused while female teachers spoke against them. They said the committee did not call witnesses and only their statements were taken on telephone.

They alleged that Imtiaz Warraich, a sociology department teacher, had also threatened them if they did not forgive the accused, they be ready for consequences.

Earlier, both complainants boycotted a two-member inquiry committee, consisting of Dr Zahida Tassaduq and Dr Humaira Arif Dasti -- saying both members had tired to take statements from them in the favour of accused teachers.

Dr Alqama, the head of the inquiry committee, says the complainants submitted the material supporting their claims of harassment to the committee. He said the committee would submit its report to the VC on Tuesday (tomorrow). Also, Farhan Khan, a junior clerk at the BZU, has submitted an application to the VC that Imtiaz Warraich, university teacher, forced him to give a statement that he had an affair with one of the complainants. Mr Warraich denied the allegation. Sahr Khalil and Dr Pasha were not available for comment. Dawn

Yet another probe into sexual harassment

Multan, Aug 18, 2008: The Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) syndicate has formed yet another committee to probe the alleged sexual harassment of two psychology department female students.

The syndicate appointed Lahore High Court Justice Khalid Alvi, also a syndicate member, and Dr G.A. Meyana, former Gomal University vice chancellor, committee members to hear the alleged harassment of victims on Aug 25, BZU vice chancellor Muhammad Zaffarullah said.

It will be a third inquiry into the allegations of two clinical psychology students, who say that on May 23 when they were attempting their paper, a female teacher summoned them to her office on charges of cheating.

They alleged that four women teachers forced them to take off their clothes for body search and asked them to "please" a male teacher.

Earlier, a two-member committee, consisting of Dr Humaira Arif Dasti and Dr Zahida Tassawur, looked into the matter but the complainants boycotted the proceedings, which forced the university to make another four-member inquiry team, consisting of Dr G.R. Pasha, Dr Sikandar Hayat, Sahr Khalil and Dr Khwaja Alqama. The body submitted its findings to the vice chancellor on July 1.

A syndicate member seeking anonymity said the report of the four-member committee was presented in the meeting but the administration tried to hush up the matter.

The complainants said they would present all evidences to the new committee. Dawn
