University of Karachi launches investigative psychology programme

Karachi: The Department of Psychology, Karachi University (KU) has especially designed courses of investigative psychology for the personnel of law enforcement agencies and lawyers, as Post Graduate Diploma in Investigative Psychology and Post Magisterial Diploma Course in Industrial & Organisational. The admissions will be open for the fall 2008-09 for Masters and Diploma programmes. The degree duration will be of 2-year Masters programme. The programmes would be started from Monday (today).

A Bachelor degree in Arts/Science/Commerce, at least in Second Division from any recognised university of Pakistan will be the minimum requirement for Post-Graduate Diploma in Investigative Psychology; there will be no quota seats except self-finance basis. This was said by the KU Deptt of Psychology Director/Chairman and Associate Professor Evening Programme, Haider Rizvi on Sunday.

He said, "This is a matter of immense pleasure that the Department of Psychology in its history has started the following programmes to expand the discipline of Psychology. The programme has been specially designed for those who have already been employed and could not get the opportunity to enhance their knowledge; or who wanted to study Psychology but could not get the opportunity to do so.

The primary objective of the diploma in investigative psychology is to enable the students to get a broader picture of the behavioural science and to help them develop social skills in dealing with the community and law-enforcement agencies. The said course will enable students to familiarise themselves to scientific analysis of psycho-social aspects of crime with special reference to Pakistan."

He said that in 2007, classes used to be held from 6-9:00pm; however, schedule of classes are made according to the convenience & consensus of the students.

He said that the diploma would be comprised on two semesters, while in the first semester five courses would be taught. Such courses include Introduction to Human Behaviour & Ethics, Psychopathology, Crime & Genetics, Geography of Crime, Research Methodology and Statistics and Psychological Approaches to Understanding Crime.

The second semester will include six other courses, including Psychometrics and Computer Applications, Psychology of Terrorism and Violence, Principles of Crime Prevention and Security, Criminal Law In Pakistan and Communication Skills and Psychological Investigative Methods in Policing, while project will be compulsory, he added.

Talking about the eligibility for the Post Magisterial Diploma Course in Industrial & Organisational, he said students should hold a masters degree in Industrial & Clinical /Applied/Educational Psychology from an accredited university of Pakistan/South East Asia/Western Union or any other foreign university.

Those with a masters degree in business administration /information technology/medicine/engineering/public administration may be considered for admission, provided there is no sufficient number of applicants available from a psychology background, he said.
