Expelled Islami Jamiat Tulaba activists abduct PU employees

LAHORE: A group of more than 15 Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) activists and expelled students kidnapped three employees of the Punjab University (PU) Centre for Excellence in Solid State Physics on Thursday.

The abducted employees included security guard Abdul Qayum, gatekeeper Shahid Mehmood and driver Mohsin Rasool. According to a PU spokesman, the IJT activists took the hostages to Hostel No 4. However, officers of the administration reached the hostel and managed to have the employees released after some time.

Forced entry: The Centre’s Director Prof Dr Shahzad Naseem reported to Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran that the department’s guards brought a boy Usman Ashraf to him and complained that he had misbehaved when asked to show his identity.

The director said he tried to cool down the angry boy, but Ashraf said he was an expelled student of the university and could go anywhere in the university. He said even the VC could not stop him. According to the director, he asked the boy why he was in the department, but he refused to talk and threatened the director with dire consequences.

The director said Ashraf left the centre, and returned later with other people, and tried to abduct some of the centre’s staff. The director said he went outside, and saw Ashraf with four or five other students.

Lesson: He said the activists said they had abducted the employees of the centre “to teach them a lesson”.

PU Resident Officer Shahid Gul told Aaj Kal that he and other officials reached Hostel No 4 on receiving information, but the IJT activists released the employees on seeing the officials coming. He said the IJT activists also threatened the centre employees of dire consequences. He said they also returned the guard’s kalashnikov after negotiating with the administration.

PU IJT Nazim Qaiser Sharif claimed the activist had gone to the centre to get some information, but the guards misbehaved with him. He alleged the guards also manhandled the activist. DAILY TIMES
