University of Agriculture Faisalabad Work on Solar power plant kicks off 
Faisalabad :August 28: The work on 3.8MW solar powered electricity generation plant at University of Agriculture Faisalabad has started and the project will complete in six months.
This was stated by speakers during a ceremony at Postgraduate Agricultural Research Station (PARS), Jhang Road, UAF. Austrian former defence minister Herbert Scheibner was the chief guest. The university is setting up the plant in collaboration with a multinational company to produce clean and pollution-free solar energy of 5.7MW peak load and 3.8 MW average running load. The company is also setting up the greenhouses on 21 acres at UAF where five major off-season crops would be grown. The Austrian team included Member of Parliament Gerhard Huber and Austrian Company CEO Rainer Kertes. Company CEO Shahzada Khurram and UAF Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Herbert Scheibner vowed to provide all-out efforts to Pakistan in promoting alternative energy to cope with the power outages issue. He stressed the need to enhance collaboration between Pakistan and Austria in the various fields, including education, energy sector and agriculture. He said the people of his country were shifting to solar energy. “Several companies are operating in the solar energy field in Austria, which can help Pakistan in the said projects.”
In his welcome address, the UAF vice-chancellor said that the electricity produced from the solar project would cost Rs 3.17 per unit for the next 12 years. He said that it was totally foreign funded project.
Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal said Pakistan being on the solar belt was suitable for the solar energy. He said that UAF had also designed and installed biogas tube-well system and off-grid power generation (15KV) for solving the problems of farmers. He said the university had also launched the first degree programmes of Energy System Engineering, and Environmental Engineering aiming at producing a pool of professionals who would serve the sector. Gerhard Huber said that as many as 40,000 villages in Pakistan were out of the electricity and the issue could be addressed with the promotion of solar energy.
