LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Population Welfare, Neelam Jabbar Ch. has said that the present government is undertaking revolutionary and reformatory steps for uplift of health and education sectors, whereas, the funds are being provided to public sector hospitals for the complete elimination of blindness from the country by 2020.

She said that effective measures for further improvement of education, health and social sectors in the province are being taken so that people can be fully benefited from the reformatory steps introduced by the present government. While taking to delegations of doctors and people regarding White Cane Day at her residence, Neelam Jabbar Ch. said that Punjab Eye Bank will also be established so as to make proper arrangements for the storage of cornea from abroad as well as its provision to the patients. She asked the members of NGOs to motivate the people for their eye donation for the deserving blind people.
The Minister said that about 90 percent of the world's blind live in the developing countries, however, there is hope given the fact that 80 percent of the blindness is either preventable or curable, the blindness due to cataract, trachoma corneal blindness, low vision and refractive errors could be cured through preventive and treatment measures. She said that NGOs from Australia and UK had launched projects to provide state-of-the-art ophthalmologic facilities to the people of far-flung areas at a cost of Rs. 5 million and 12 million dollars respectively.

The NGOs as well as philanthropists should come forward and play their due role in this great social service, she concluded.
