Lahore:October 09: THE Punjab Education and English Language Initiative (PEELI), a five-year project by the British Council Pakistan to equip the government teachers of the province and those teaching at the government’s partnered schools with the English language skills and teaching methodology, was formally launched on Tuesday.
The launching ceremony held at a local hotel was attended by Sir Vernon Ellis who became Chairman of the British Council in March 2010, Peter Upton, British Council Pakistan Country Director, Richard Weyers, Director British Council Punjab, Alan Mackenzie, Director PEELI, Punjab Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, other officials and a large number of people including educationists and representatives of non-profit organisations. Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif was scheduled to be the chief guest on the occasion but he did not come. Speaking on the occasion, Richard Weyers, while sharing results of a baseline survey held with regard to the PEELI project, said as per survey 94 percent schoolteachers were illiterate with English language skills to teach. He however added the good news was that their motivation level and urge to learn was quite high.
Alan Mackenzie gave a presentation about the PEELI project and shared the findings of the baseline survey. According to him, the attitude of teachers in Punjab to training was very positive and they enjoyed receiving training.

 

He said the project PEELI was aimed to train 300,000 teachers of government schools and those partnered with the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) in order to improve their ability to teach English as an additional language.
