Electoral College for presidential candidate incomplete in Sindh

Karachi :18 July: The Electoral College for presidential poll is incomplete in Sindh as seven seats of the national and provincial assembly are still vacant in the province. The forthcoming presidential elections will be held on August 6, as announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Political parties have started preparations in this regard. Pakistan People’s Party-Parliamentarian, which is in opposition in the National Assembly, but the Sindh Government, had earlier demanded from the ECP to complete the electoral college before going for the poll.

The Electoral College is consisted of the National Assembly, Senate and all four provincial assemblies. Each member of the federal parliament has one vote, while the provincial assemblies cast 65 votes each. Some 5.58 members of the Sindh Assembly will cast one vote. The vacant NA seats from Sindh are NA-235 Sanghar, NA-237 Thatta, and NA-254 Karachi. Four vacant PA seats include PS-12 Shikarpur, PS-64 Mirpurkhas, PS-95 Karachi, and PS-103, Karachi.

Joint presidential candidate: PPP has started working on bringing a joint candidate of Opposition parties for forthcoming Presidential Election.

Bringing a joint Opposition candidate for Presidential Election is need of the hour, said PPP-Parliamentarian chief, Makhdoom Amin Fahim here on Wednesday. He was talking to journalists at an Iftar Party hosted by a PPP leader, Makhdoom Fazal Hussain at a local hotel. Senator Raza Rabbani, Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah and other leaders of the PPP and provincial ministers were also present on the occasion.

Makhdoom said opposition parties had started consultations on bringing a join presidential candidate, and the PPP was also engaged in formulating its strategy in this regard.

He said the announcement of election schedule for Presidential Election by the Election Commission of Pakistan without completing the Electoral College was not understandable. However, the political parties expect that the ECP will not do anything unconstitutional.

According to him, it is also not incomprehensible why the PML-N was in hurry for getting the Presidential Election conducted. The PPP leader said PML-N had still not changed its old attitude and policy of rejecting opposition’s positive proposals.

While talking on the occasion, PPP leader Raza Rabbani condemned threats from PML-N quarters regarding imposition of Governor Rule in the Sindh.

He advised the Federal government to stop issuing such threats. He warned that nobody’s mandate would remain safe in the country if governor rule was imposed in Sindh.
