Associate Degree to replace two-year BA, BSc
PESHAWAR:14 July: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) in a notification has announced that they will replace the two-year BA/BSc programme with Associate Degree programme (AD) and has changed the nomenclature for the degree.

A notification available with The Express Tribune on Saturday exclusively stated that new the postsecondary programme would be called an ‘Associate Degree’ and soon the BA-BSc programme would be discontinued.

The notification also stated that those students who enrolled before December 31, 2018 are allowed until December, 2020 to complete their BA, BSc degrees and those, who failed the course, would be awarded the Associate Degree upon completion of the course.
The notification also said that the aim of the associated degree programme is to provide a general education that is broadly applicable and helps students gain marketable skills.

Over 150,000 students to repeat exams

The subjects which would be compulsory included urdu, english, Pakistan studies, Islamiyat, (religious studied for non-Muslim students) ethics, economics and general science, while in terms of marketable skills, computer literacy, office management skills, farm management and skills in agricultural management, retail service skills, hospitality , industrial skills, technology related skills, accounting and business related skills will be taught.

The colleges and universities offering the AD programmes would be allowed to move gradually and fulfil the new requirements from current BA/BSc programmes while the guidelines of the requirements shall be in accordance to the HEC directives, the notification stated.

The HEC has directed all chancellors and public sectors colleges, higher education departments and divisional sections of regional centres of HEC to follow the given directives.

Meanwhile, a high official of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Higher Education Department has disclosed that they could not initiate the course in the colleges across the province due to the limited resources and staff across the province’s education institutions.

“We have already coordinated with the provincial government. We cannot start the Associated Degree programme in the colleges as, due to the financial constraints we are facing and also lack of the staffers. It would take a long period of time and soon after the consultation with the K-P government we also have a plan to take-up with the HEC soon,” the senior official added. The Express Tribune, July 14th, 2019.
