Lahore College For Woman University Seminar
Lahore : September 19 :A seminar titled as “A Healthy Atmosphere: The Future we want” was held here on Wednesday at Student Service Center, LCWU Lahore, in which eminent environmentalists and consultants participated.
Punjab Environment Secretary Anwar Rashid was the chief guest on this occasion while Prof Dr KJ Cheema, LCWU, Dr Sarah Bell, UCL,UK, Saamia Saif, ECO, Muhammad Asif Khan, Richard Weyers, Director British Council, Vice Chancellor Dr Sabiha Mansoor, LCWU and a large number of students and representatives of industries and chambers were also present. Muhammad Asif Khan presented a comprehensive presentation and showed a detailed documentary on Ozone depletion and described the steady decline of the total amount of ozone in the Earth’s stratosphere. He said there is a much larger seasonal decrease in stratospheric ozone at the Earth’s polar-regions (ie the ozone hole). CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), halons and other contributory substances are commonly referred to as ozone depleting substances (ODS). The ozone layer prevents most harmful wavelengths of ultraviolet light (UV light) from passing through the Earth’s atmosphere. Ozone depletion generated worldwide concern and led to the ban of CFCs and halons and of other ozone depleting chemicals, such as carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethane (also known as methyl chloroform). Asif Khan guided the participants that increased UV exposure due to ozone depletion can cause skin cancer, damage to plants, and reduction of plankton populations. Secretary Environment Anwar Rashid said that academia, government and private departments should join hands together to tackle the environmental issues. The news.
