Islamia College Civil Lines Lahore clashes over wall-chalking

Islamia College students arrested over wall chalking
Lahore, July 29: Islampura police raided the hostels of Government Islamia College Civil Lines, arrested more than 40 students and a professor and severely thrashed them on Tuesday after the Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) — the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami — wrote party slogans on walls.

After keeping the students at the police station for more than four hours, the police nominated four students in an FIR, registered under Sections 148, 149, 186, 353, and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code and released all others. On recognising Professor Rasheed, Crescent Hostel warden of Islamia College, the police released him. Police severely beat the professor up and tore his clothes before releasing him, students said.

Islampura Station House Officer (SHO) Maqsood Ali Gujjar said those booked include Civil Lines College IJT Nazim Abdul Saboor, Hostels Nazim Asad, Rizwan and Saqlain. He said the police released all other students, adding that they were arrested to thwart a protest, which troubled commuters and could turn violent. According to details, the IJT activists had written slogans in favour of their organisation on the college wall and the wall erected between the road in front of the office of the Chief Traffic Officer two days ago. On Tuesday, officials of the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) reached the hostels to remove the wall chalking.

Intervened: According to the SHO, police intervened when the students tried to beat the CDGL officials. The students severely thrashed a constable and tore his uniform, he said. The students protested by blocking The Mall and Lower Mall. They chanted anti-police and pro-IJT slogans. A police contingent reached the spot and tried to stop the students.

The students started pelting stones at police, which in turn, baton charged them. Police broke into the hostel, sealed it and searched every single room, a hostel attendant said. A gatekeeper said the police arrested Professor Rasheed from his office and beat him even though the professor had introduced himself. However, after talks with the IJT leaders, police released most of the students. The IJT ensured police of no wall chalking in future.
