Educationists urged to benefit from new discoveries
LAHORE:Former finance minister Sartaj Aziz has stressed the need for undertaking a comparative study of all scientific innovations made to date, to evaluate which scientific discoveries promoted human welfare and which ones paved way for its destruction.
He was speaking at the launching ceremony of a book ëAtom Bomb: Tasawar Say Haqeeqat Takí authored by Punjab University (PU) pro vice-chancellor Dr Jamil Anwar Ch at the New Campus here on Thursday.
According to an estimate, Sartaj Aziz said, the scientific knowledge created during the last two thousand years would double in the coming decade.
He urged educationists to benefit from emerging scientific and nuclear advancements for improvement of agrarian and industrial sectors in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, PU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran said that only those nations had achieved socio-economic superiority and dominance over other nations which had devoted their time and energy for the creation and utilization of knowledge through education and research. He said the creation of atom bomb had increased the possibility of annihilation of mankind from the face of earth. Keeping in view the US strategy in Iraq and the on-going Afghan war, the likelihood of atomic war could not be ruled out, he said, adding that the number of children born in an Iraqi city, Faluja, with cancer-like fatal diseases was four times greater than the number of such children born after atomic attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
All Muslim leaders should raise their voice against the US atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan, he added.
He said it had been decided to publish low cost editions of famous books through varsity printing press, enabling students to purchase a book at a cheap price of Rs 50, instead of Rs 400 in the market.
Renowned columnist Dr Atta-ul-Haq Qasmi and eminent poet and columnist Amjad Islam Amjad, Punjab Education Foundation chairman Raja Muhammad Anwar, former vice chancellors Dr Rafiq Ahmad and Khairat Ibne Rasa and Professor Emeritus Kh Muhammad Zakriya also spoke on the occasion.
