HSC exams in Karachi students did not receive admit cards
KARACHI:17 April: The 2019 Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Part I and II exams commenced in Karachi on Monday and will continue till May 9. Over 215,800 students are appearing in the exams this year. On Monday, the exams for botany, general science and computer science for Grade XII were held in the morning shift while the exam for principles of commerce was held in the evening shift.

Several students, who did  not receive their admit cards, visited the office of Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) multiple times. They shouted slogans against the board administration. According to them, they have frequented the board office multiple times but to no avail. The students also complained of a lack of response from the administration.

However, BIEK Chairperson Prof Inam Ahmed said that the admit cards were delayed due to the late registration of some students, adding that the students who were scheduled to appear in Monday’s exams had been issued their admit cards. The students who have not been issued admit cards yet are those whose papers are  scheduled on later dates.

Prof Ahmed said students were notified numerous times of the deadline to submit their registration forms for the exams, adding that the students were given ample time since January to do so. However, some students submitted their forms late while others fell prey to the agent mafia. Now, the delay in the issuance of admit cards for these students is because the staff is busy conducting the exam, he said.

According to Prof Ahmed, thr board had accommodated late registrations of students who were registering through colleges with a penalty. The students were asked to bring a letter from their college administration explaining the reason for delay, and pay a late fee, and they were allowed to register.

The board chairperson explained that some corrupt officials within BIEK connive with college officials and students and withhold the registration of some students in order to accommodate students in their preferred centres. The students who register on time and through proper channels are assigned their designated centres while the students who fall prey to the agent mafia are left stranded at times since they are accommodated at the end. The delay in registration then contributes to the delay in the issuance of admit cards.

The home department has imposed Section 144 around the examination centres. A total of 188 centres have been established for the 2019 intermediate exams and 59 of these centres have been termed sensitive.

As per Section 144, the entry of unauthorised persons, use of mobile phones and electronic devices by students and examination staff and officials has been banned.
