Gomal University rusticates 23 students for protesting fee hike
PESHAWAR:17 February: The Gomal University has rusticated as many as 23 students who had staged protests against the university administration for raising fees.

The students had staged a protest walk from the main campus of the university to GPO Chowk in Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan), urging the university administration to lower admission fees, hire more teachers and address their transportation issues.

Instead of addressing their grievances, the varsity reportedly expelled students.
The students claimed that a notification had been issued the university’s chief proctor office which rusticated 10 students for two years while imposing a fine of Rs50,000 each. A further 13 students were rusticated for a year while fines of Rs25,000 were imposed on each of them under section 15-2 (b) of students conduct and discipline regulations of the university.

Explaining the hike in fees, Gomal University Registrar Dilnawaz Khan said that the provincial government has not provided funds to the university this fiscal year and that student fees were the only source of revenue left for the varsity to run its affairs.

He added that the university has been facing financial problems for a while and that it had no option but to manage its affairs somehow.

Dilnawaz further said that the varsity administration had agreed to a demand of students to lower the fees and offered an Rs4,000 discount, but this did not appease the students who demanded further cuts in fees, which was not acceptable to the university administration.

The registrar added that the university administration will restore some of the rusticated students if they explain the reason for their protest. However, he clarified that hose rusticated students, who had been booked by the police, will not be restored.

Public sector universities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) are facing a financial crisis after the federal government cut funds for the Higher Education Commission (HEC) by half.

Earlier this month, the provincial government announced to give a loan of Rs250 million to the cash-strapped University of Peshawar (UoP), which was struggling to pay salaries to its employees and pensions. The Express Tribune, February 17th, 2020.
