120 innovative models displayed at S&T competition

Peshawar: Over 120 innovative models were put on display during a two-day 'General Public Science and Technology Competition' at Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar.

The competition started on Friday. It was organised by the Directorate of Science and Technology, NWFP. It attracted the attention of people from all walks of life.

The contestants were divided into four categories: academia, general public, women and especial children.

Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Peshawar, remained prominent on the second day of the competition.

The visitors took keen interest in magic bulbs, solar energy devices, computer software, agricultural products and robots.

Abid Sohail, the Directorate of Science and Technology deputy director, said that the NWFP government wanted to polish budding scientists.

"There are people in remote areas of the province who can make interesting innovations but they cannot share their ideas with others because of unavailability of resources. This competition has offered them an opportunity to show their talent," he said.

He said the directorate would keep organising such programmes in the future.

Farhan Ali, a UET student, said participation of academia in the competition was a great effort on part of the government. "The environment here is really competitive and motivating," he said.

Muhammad Riaz, a high school student, also participated in the competition. He said he was astonished to see innovative scientific models that were put on display.

Qazi Asad, the provincial minister for higher education, was the chief guest and distributed prizes.

He praised the youth of the NWFP, who he said would put the country on the path of development and modernity.

"I am proud to be among you people, who are investing time in scientific experiments," the minister said.

He lauded efforts of special people, women and those technicians who had not got formal education from any institution.
