PU to hold 'official' book fair from 27th

Lahore: The Punjab University (PU) has decided to organise a grand three-day book fair under its own supervision while involving 'brilliant' students at the New Campus main corridor from May 27.

The PU administration led by vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran took the decision after getting nod from varsities' deans, academic departments, institutes and constituent colleges' heads and professors in a meeting held on Thursday.

The meeting had decided that the PU would itself organise a series of co-curricular activities including a book fair in due course of time. It had also agreed that all type of co-curricular activities including book fair would be held with the cooperation and participation of students to be nominated by the heads of teaching departments on the basis of a set criteria of suitability.

When contacted, VC Prof Kamran confirmed that the university would itself be holding three-day book fair from May 27 (Tuesday). He said the university would invite top publishers and booksellers to set up their stalls and hold a book fair in a befitting manner. The book fair participants would be given full logistic support.

It may be mentioned that the Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT), student wing of the Jamaat-i-Islami, had tried to hold the book fair without even seeking permission from the PU administration earlier this week. In order to establish its writ, the PU administration put its foot down and even went on taking a severe decision of suspending academic activity on its New and Old campuses for four days.

Meanwhile, the PU reopened on Friday having a sizable students' attendance. The academic activity began peacefully. Dawn
