This is the result of a political and economic strategy that started in the last decade of the 15th century in order to find an alternative maritime route to Asia”.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, this was the observation shared by Prof. Dr. Fernando Camacho Padilla, senior lecturer of Dalarna University, Sweden, at a seminar held at Punjab University’s Pakistan Study Centre (PSC) on “Spanish America: Discovery, Conquest, Colonization and Independence” on Thursday.
Director PSC Prof. Dr. Massarrat Abid, Director External Linkages Maria I. Maldonado, faculty members and students of MPhil and PhD from various disciplines of the university also attended the seminar.

Dr Padilla said that Columbus arrived on the Caribbean island in 1492 and Spain’s domain in the new land lasted for more than four centuries when the last territories, the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico, fell into US hands in 1898.

He said that during this long period of colonial rule, Spain managed its territories with great control and effectiveness. He said that nevertheless conflicts of interest among the old and new inhabitants, other European powers and the Spanish Crown marked the historical evolution of the region.
He said that the main characteristics of Spanish-colonial America included the arrival of the Conquistadors, the role of the Catholic Church during the period of Spanish domination and its position vis-a-vis the indigenous population, the economic sectors in the region, America’s trade with Spain, Spain’s relations with other European powers and the independence wars of the 19th Century. The news.
