LUMHS teachers unhappy over shortlisted candidates for VC
HYDERABAD:28 august:With some senior faculty members of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) expressing concerns regarding the expected appointment of a junior professor as the vice-chancellor (VC), the likelihood of a massive protest looms over the varsity.

The protest modes of calling a strike or tendering resignations have been floated by some faculty members. The search committee, which has shortlisted eight candidates from among the 21 applicants for the post of LUMHS VC, will hold interviews on August 28 in Karachi.

Prof Dr Anila Attaur Rehman, who is at the epicentre of this controversy, is also among the applicants who will appear before the search committee for the interviews. The other candidates include Prof (retd) Abdul Sattar Memon, Prof Akbar Nizamani, Prof Razzak Shaikh and Prof Akhtar Baloch.

SHC seeks report of LUMHS employees’ private healthcare

At a recent press conference, LUMHS Teachers Association President Prof Dr Suhail Ahmed Almani warned of a strike if the name of Prof Rehman is not removed from the list of possible VC candidates. The association claimed that her elevation to the post of BPS-21 professor has been challenged in the court as the due process was not followed.

According to Prof Almani, she was appointed as BPS-19 assistant professor in Jan, 2011. Over a month, she became a BPS-20 associate professor on own pay scale without going through the process of the selection board. He claimed that three years later, in Feb, 2014, she was appointed as BPS-21 professor allegedly in violation of the rules of Pakistan Medical and Dental Association (PMDC) and Higher Education Commission (HEC).

Dr Arshad Abro, petitioner in the Sindh High Court case against Dr Rehman, claimed that she was made pro VC in April, 2015, by superseding seniority of 31 senior teachers. The teachers also accused the secretary of universities and boards, Dr Naveed Shaikh, who is the brother of outgoing LUMHS VC Prof Dr Noshad A Shaikh, for favouring Dr Rehman.

‘Govt committed to providing high-quality healthcare’

Meanwhile, LUMHS spokesperson Dr Saroop Bhatia discredited the association. “… there is no legal existence of so-called teachers association in the university [LUMHS].” He described the allegation that rules were violated in Dr Rehman’s promotion as an attempt to defame the institution.
Prof Rehman was not available for comment. The news.
